Getting Ahead

Diane's Surgical Sign-Off and an Ongoing Puzzle

2/16/2025

Three years on from brain surgery to remove the Cavernoma, Diane has been signed off by her neurosurgeon. Nothing further for him to do it would appear.
He reviewed the most recent MRI scans with us, which clearly indicated the not insubstantial cavity in Diane's brain where the offending hematoma once resided; a large white patch about the size of a satsuma. Quite scary for Diane to view at first sight. I'd seen it all before and had tried to explain in advance, but it still came as a surprise to her.
Despite the loss of brain material, it is evident Diane's recovery in terms of cognition, memory and coordination has been astounding. Well beyond everyone's expectations. The brain is a fantastic piece of kit with almost magical self-repair capabilities, given half a chance. I am surprised daily just how much she remembers, from way back too. Things my puny mind are evidently incapable of recalling. Nothing new there then!
Despite the surgical discharge Diane is still experiencing constant pain in the back of her head, so is being referred to another consultant, who specialises in headaches, for further investigation. This pain could be linked to her neck mobility which is much improved, but still has a way to go - her head having been wedged over onto the right shoulder for so long.
As I write, Diane is getting stuck into a 500 piece jigsaw - a picture of her cuddling with our granddaughter - that had been presented by our daughter. Great therapy; concentration, hand eye coordination, picture recognition, patience etc. She's making good progress too. And to think that it wasn't that long ago a simple 1-2 year old's wooden block jigsaw was incomprehensible.
